Tonight being the night of the first crescent Moon and the sky appearing clear, I went out to try to make a sighting. Unfortunately this was a poor apparition, the Moon being below the ecliptic and only ~2.5° higher in elevation than the Sun. By the time the Sun had set behind buildings on my horizon the Moon was down into the clouds presenting a low contrast condition that my red filter could not overcome.

CommentsWhen I checked Planetarium for Moon data I noticed that Venus, Mercury and Mars were sliding down the ecliptic ~23° behind the Moon and within the Golden Gate binocular’s 10° FoV.

I thought that these three planets might include a fourth, Earth, if viewed from somewhere else so I expanded the view on the orrery and found that when viewed from Neptune the Earth would also appear near Mercury, Venus and Mars.

It is very pleasant out for a change. It isn’t too warm and the humidity is just over the low/moderate threshold. The sky is blue but not a deep blue and in the binocular I can see some foxing around the Sun.

There is a very small area of plage in the SOHO images off the eastern limb. Active Region Explorer does not show this but does show group 1000 just about to rotate back onto the earth-facing surface of the sun in the southern hemisphere. There is no indication of this in the SOHO images yet.

The Moon was still high in the sky and there was still enough contrast that I could detect marea naked-eye although I couldn't really make out any shape to identify Mare Imbrium and Oceanus Procelarum that I knew I was seeing.

The Moon hasn't yet reached last quarter yet as it has an obvious bulge of sunlight intruding into the shadow.

Space Weather is displaying an image of sunspots taken by an (amateur ?) observer in Slovakia that shows what are described as small but rapidly growing spots that have just rotated onto the earth-facing surface of the Sun. They are too small to appear in the SOHO images or in my optics.

About a month ago I was walking home and my eye caught something on the sidewalk. Backtracking I recognized it as a cicada. Backtracking again I thought to pick it up if it were dead, which it was. I have finally gotten around to photographing it and processing the images. They aren't great, but do illustrate the insect.

This is the business side of the insect.

From the description of the sound-making apparatus I think this is it although I can't figure out its mechanics.

The giveaway for people finding these things is the eyes, which are huge.

The insect has a large proboscus that, according to the literature, is about as dangerous to humans as that of a butterfly.

When I woke up the other day I heard a few cicads calling so stuck a microphone out the window and recorded( 1.14 MB MP3 file) them (and a lot of the other noise I have to listen to when my windows are open).

I was on my way home to dinner and saw Jupiter so decided to walk around the oval seeing what else might be there. Then I remembered that I had my binocular in my bag so got it out and walked around again.

CommentsJupiter was low over the apartment buildings directly across from me and looked huge and very bright. With the binocular I thought I saw a moon on the eastern limb (it would have been Europa) but it is hard to hold the small binocular still to view close objects. Nunki was very obvious to the lower right of the planet.

CommentsI picked out Deneb (Mag. 1.25), Sadr (Mag. 2.23), Gienah Cygni (Mag. 2.48), δ Cyg (Mag. 2.86) and Alberio (Mag. 3.05). With the binocular I was not able to see the duplicity of Alberio. I may have seen a few more of the wing and neck stars.

A found several definitions in Ambrose Bierce's The Devil's Dictionary that relate to astronomy and related sciences.
Berenice's Hair
n. A constellation (Coma Berenices) named in honor of one who sacrificed her hair to save her husband.

Day
n. A period of twenty-four hours, most misspent. This period is divided into two parts, the day proper and the night, or day improper – the former devoted to sins of business, the later consecrated to the other sort. These two kinds of social activity overlap.

Lunarian
n. An inhabitant of the moon, as distinguished from Lunatic, one whom the moon inhabits. The Lunarians have been described by Lunican, Locke and other observers, but without much agreement. For example, Bragellos avers their anatomical identity with Man, but Professor Newcomb says they are more like the hill tribes of Vermont.
Magnitude
n. Size. Magnitude, being purely relative, nothing is large and nothing small. If everything in the universe were increased in bulk one thousand diameters nothing would be any larger than it would be larger that they had been. To an understanding familiar with the relativity of magnitude and distance the spaces and masses of the astronomer would be no more impressive than those of the microscopist. For anything we know to the contrary, the visible universe may be a small part of an atom, with its component ions, floating in the life-fluid (luminiferous ether) of some animal. Possibly the wee creatures peopling the corpuscles of our own blood are overcome with the proper emotion when contemplating the unthinkable distance from one of these to another.
Molecule
n. The ultimate, indivisible unit of matter. It is distinguished from the corpuscle, also the ultimate, indivisible unit of matter, by a closer resemblance to the atom, also the ultimate, indivisible unit of matter. Three great scientific theories of the structure of the universe are the molecular, the corpuscular and the atomic. Newtonian

Past

Zenith
n. A point in the heavens directly overhead to a standing man or a growing cabbage. Around noon it was perfectly clear with a beautiful blue sky. By 1400 EDT it looked like a front was passing through with mares tails lowering into a stripe of stratus. Now it is clear again. But it feels cool.

SpaceWeather has a brief article today about how observers in Norway detected the passage of a solar wind gust on 18Aug08 UTC by watching the earth’s magnetic flux. I have built a solar wind indicator that would do this but have never gotten it completed to the point that I have tested it and wasn’t looking at it at the time the gust passed by.

I am reading Ambrose Bierce's The Devil's Dictionary and found an entry that I think could be applied to the Pluto debacle:
Australia
n. A country lying in the South Sea, whose industrial and commercial development has been unspeakably retarded by an unfortunate dispute among geographers as to whether it is a continent or an island.



NASA has announced a delay in the launch of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter from Dec08 until Feb09.

The delay does not seem to be a necessity and is going to cost NASA $7 million a month ($21 million total) which will come out of a slush fund built into the LRO program budget. (If the agency is canceling missions to get up to "the Moon and beyond", why is there a $21 million slush fund in the LRO budget and how many other budgets have similar slush funds that could be transferred back to other programs?)

DoD will be taking over the launch window and rocket to test a reusable satellite. There is no indication that there is any urgency in launching that craft early, but DoD wouldn't be advertising it if there were. But the launch will get the satellite up there while King George is still on his thrown so we might be going somewhere else before the end of the year.

Spaceflight Now has an article saying NASA has decided not to change the date of the HST Servicing Mission and STS-125.

Atlantis is scheduled to beging the mission on 8Oct08 at 0134 EDT.

Endeavour should liftoff at 2128 EST on 10Nov08.

I don't think there will be a chance to see Atlantis as it passes past NYC on liftoff but Endeavour should be visible at 2136 EST.

It looks like the only reason why they were talking about moving the two launches forward by three or six days was to give them more slosh to get the two flights off the ground in 2008.

Endeavour will be on a launch pad ready for launch in case there is a problem with Atlantis that requires a rescue mission. If they decide that Atlantis is in good shape Endeavour will have its payload installed to ready it for its primary mission in November.

STS-126 still doesn't have a logo. I am assuming that the potential rescue commander and pilot will be the STS-126 commander and pilot so that should be locked down. I don't know if they haven't decided who the mission specialists will be and that may be what is delaying the logo.



Another Spaceflight Now article posted yesterday says that there is another debate on whether Pluto is a planet.

It looks like this is more entertainment and maybe a moneymaker for somebody than anything that is going to change anything.

Mark Sykes of the Planetary Science Institute, who wants all the classical planets and dwarf planets to be real planets, will be debating the classification system with Neil deGrasse Tyson from the American Museum of Natural History, who has long held that Pluto is not a planet.

It is very breeze in this nearly enclosed, although large, area. The flag is extended a good part of the time and I can see and hear plastic that was protecting a corner of a building that is being pointed flapping in the wind.

Clouds are covering most of the sky but there are some gaps out to the NE. The transparency is good where you can see the sky – I can see the right side of the ice cream cone of Boötes.

The air feels much dryer than the 56% relative humidity that is being reported.

I got lucky and the pass was in a fairly clear parch of sky.
It was surprisingly bright in a twilight sky and I think the CalSky brightness estimate is closer to the fact than that of Heavens Above.

By 2115 it was windy enough that I couldn’t read any longer for fear of the wind doing damage to the pages of my bool.

The wind is blowing plastic liners out of the wire mesh trash cans. Trash is blowing up and down the sidewalk.

By 2300 it was overcast and I could no longer locate Jupiter. There was a tiny dark spot over where the flare should occur so I stuck it out in case I got extremely lucky and the clouds broke up or the flare occurred in the small clear patch of sky.

The ISS popped out of the top of a cloud bank on the horizon and moments later went behind a stripe of clouds a little higher up but it was visible through the cloud for half of the time. It headed up toward Arcturus and, to the naked eye, appeared to occult the star. It faded from view about 10° to the upper left of Arcturus.

This is another one that there is an appreciable difference in the magnitude estimates of Heavens Above and CalSky.

I found my Pupil Gauge today so decided to find out how big my pupils are. During the daytime in my apartment they measured about 3.25 mm. At night outside they were 5.25 mm and when I got home and tested them in my darkened apartment they were ou to 5.75 mm.

I found a link on the web indicating that my pupil should, based on my age, be between 5 mm and 4.1 mm, probably closer to 4.1 mm.

I searched my blog for "pupil gauge" to see if there has been any change from when I got the gauge but don't find any listings so don't know how my eyes have changed over time. But I do know that my arms have shrunk again.
