I am finding a disparity between the data given in Heavens Above and that in CalSky. Start and end of the pass can be attributed to Heavens Above reporting it at 10° Alt while CalSky reports it at the horizon. But they both should show the same time and location for culmination.

Space Weather indicates that Group 983 is still there but when I look at the high resolution SoHo image all I see is a little bit of plage. I don’t see anything in my binocular.

The National Geographic society has held a contest to devise a mnemonic to help remember the order of the current 11 planets. Space.com says that a 10-year-old girl has won the contest but they aren't saying what the mnemonic is. I did find it on a blog, however.

The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff has said that the analysis gives them a "high degree of confidence" that the hydrazine tank was breached when the Navy hit the USA 193 spy satellite with an ABM. They are tracking about 3,000 pieces of debris which are all smaller than a football. Are there any more pieces of debris that they are tracking that are larger than a football? I bet that is another question they wouldn't answer if asked. They say that "The vast majority of debris has already re-entered or will shortly re-enter the Earth's atmosphere in the coming days and weeks. They also say that there have not been any reports of debris surviving to impact earth and they are not expecting there to be any in the future. I haven't seen any reports of people observing reentering debris.

CommentsI am not sure if I saw this flare or not. At that time I saw a bright flash in the area where the flare should have been. It faded very quickly as I would expect an Iridium flare to do in a bright sky and only around 95° away from the Sun. Then there was another longer flash and more flashes followed. CalSky didn’t give any indication that there would be multiple flashes. Between the flashes I thought I saw a dark gray dot. It was like the flashing of the “Midnight Sun” beneath a police helicopter comight straight at you except that the flashes weren’t regular enough and the track of the object was across my field of vision. I don’t think a satellite is big enough to be seen naked-eye as a dark dot even if you know exactly where to look. I wasn’t able to find it in the binocular. I suspect that I was seeing the sun glinting off of the wings and/or fuselage of a plane but none of the other planes in that area exhibited any flashes and I didn’t see any colored lights in the interval between the flashes.

Back when Apollo 11 made the first manned landing on the Moon I purchased a limited edition silver commemorative coin from the Franklin Mint. The obverse of the coin depicts one of the astronauts setting foot on the moon.

The reverse of the coin shows the plaque that was attached to the lander leg and remains on the Moon to this day.

I didn’t continue to collect similar coins for the rest of the Moon landings but I did purchase the coin for the last landing, Apollo 17. The obverse of that coin depicts one of the astronauts deploying scientific instruments

while the reverse depicts the mission patch.


When President Dwight D Eisenhower died the US Mint commemorated his life with a quasi-silver dollar (It is nickel-clad copper rather than silver. There was a collector’s version of the coin which did contain silver but only around 82%.). The first coins were issued in 1971. The obverse of the coin shows Eisenhower’s head while the reverse shows an eagle landing on the Moon (“The Eagle has landed.”)

At the time of the US bicentennial the mint issued the coin for three years with the bicentennial date on the obverse and a large Liberty Bell superimposed over a large Moon.


On the 20th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing the Republic of the Marshall Islands issued a $5 silver commemorative coin, legal tender in the Islands. It was enclosed in a glossy folder with the text quoted below.

America Lands the First Men on the Moon July 20, 1969, 4:17 p.m., Sea of Tranquility, Moon. "The Eagle has landed." When this message was broadcast from the moon's surface twenty years ago, the world fell silent ... and in awe. For not only had America Fulfilled the pledge made by President Kennedy -- to land a man on the moon by 1970 -- but she had realized the dream of generations of mankind. The suspense was heart-stopping right up to the final hours. A vital computer malfunctioned during the descent. And as the Eagle approached the moon's surface, the manual controls had to be swiftly engaged to steer clear of lunarboulders. But Eagle did land. And when the astronauts emerged for their historic 1-1/4 hour moon walk, Neil Armstrong uttered the words "That's one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind." An American flag was erected on the windless lunar surface, and a plaque left behind on the landing module bears these words: "Here men from the planet Earth firstset foot upon the Moon, July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind."

The obverse of the coin is very similar to the Franklin Mint coin but, to my eye, not as well engraved. The reverse of the coin bears the seal of the Republic of the Marshall Islands.

Story of the First Men on the Moon Coin

The First Men on the Moon $5 Commemorative Coin was issued by the Republic of the Marshall Islands precisely 20 years after the historic moon landing. This cupro-nickel coin is legal tender of the Republic of the Marshall Islands and salutes the most triumphant achievement in the history of American space exploration. The obverse of the coin captures the mement when an Apollo 11 astronaut stepped off the Eagle landing cragt and is modeled after a photograph taken by Neil Armstrong, already on the surface of the moon. The reverse of the coin bears the official seal of the Republic of the Marshall Islands. The Marshall Islands, most famous for its role as a U.S. staging area during World War II, was granted complete independance by the U.S. in 1986 [but we still have to provide disaster relief and national defense for them]. The Apollo 11 Astronauts

The historic Apollo 11 flight was piloted by three veteran astronauts. The first man on the moon was 38-year-old Neil Armstrong, whose previous flight experience included the Gemini 8 mission, during which he successfully performed the first docking in space. At 39, Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin was the second man on the moon. His prior experience included three breathtaking spacewalks undertaken duing the 1966 Gemini 12 mission. Michael Collins, also 39 at the time of the Apollo 11 flight, was the pilot who remained in control of the orbiting Columbia while Armstrong and Aldrin maneuvered the Eagle landing craft to the moon's surface. Previously, Collins had taken part in the Gemini 10 mission.

And in 1971 the Soviet Union issued a series of stamps celebrating the 20th anniversary of the space age. I ordered First Day Covers through the Franklin Mint. The cachet on each of the six covers is by cosmonaut-artist Alexei Leonov.

Commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the Space Age

Each of the Official First Day Covers in this collection bears the unique first day of issue postmark of Baikhonur, site of the Soviet space launches – unique because it marks the first time the U.S.S.R. has ever designated a site outside Moscow for an official first day of issue cancellation. The cancellation date is October 4, 1977 – 20th anniversary of the launching of the first Sputnik, the world’s first earth satellite.

Each cover carries a different commemorative stamp and corresponding cachet design which was created especially for that cover by Cosmonaut Alexei Leonov. The cosmonaut, who is also a gifted artist, served in the Soviet Air Force until 1960 when he joined the first group of airmen in training for Soviet space flights. He later became the first man to walk in space and was appointed Soviet command pilot for the Apollo-Soyuz mission culminating in the link-up of American and Soviet vehicles in outer space.

Included in this collection is a First Day Cover commemorating the first manned space flight. Both the stamp and Leonov’s cachet design bear portraits of Yuri Gagarin who piloted Vostok I on its memorable flight. Leonov himself appears on the stamp and on the cachet design commemorating the ten-minute space walk of March 18, 1965 when the artist became the first man to walk in outer space. The accomplishment of space research by orbital space stations is honored by the stamp which pictures the docking of the Soyuz spacecraft and the Salyut space station. We are indebted to Alexei Leonov for the notes which he so graciously provided to help sketch is personal background.

MY BIOGRAPHY AS AN ARTIST begins in my early childhood and I soon acquired both fans and critics. Some were happy when all of a sudden with a piece of black charcoal I created another masterpiece on the whitewashed wall in the shape of an aircraft, winged sailing vessel or a cartoon ridiculing the neighborhood bully. The others, mainly adults, could not understand such creations and sometimes threatened to tear off my ears.

My father and mother always supported me in my passion to create and often forgave my many shortcomings, such as paintings on the walls, the oven, and even on the white tablecloth. But once even their patience was exhausted, when on the eve of the New Year I painted their windows with all the colors of the rainbow.

I also enjoyed watching clouds – they were for me a source of fantasy, lively and changing. I was fascinated by every knot in the fence, every crack in the wall.

When I began to go to the first form, or school, I was aware of light and shadow and used them in my drawings. My first drawing lesson let me show my abilities and attracted the attention of my teacher and school director.

There were years of trial for our country, for a terrible war was going on. Children in school lacked many necessary things, including paints, paper and pencils. I found a way out of this hardship – a piece of lead sharpened with a file would be used in place of a pencil to draw on paper. However, my hands got dirty very quickly, and my pockets became torn from the weight of heavy lead and file.

While in the third form, I took up lessons with a group of young artists at the House of Pioneers. Here I came to know perspective, composition and design. These studies captivated me, and I wished I could have taken more of them.

My formal education as an artist stopped at the House of Pioneers, but my self-education continued all my life. I used to become absorbed in books about artists, essays by art critics. My special passion became reproductions of masterpieces. I managed to collect a complete set of reproductions of the paintings of the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. The book by Repin, “The Far and the Near,” became my handbook as well as “Learn to Draw” by Deineka.

I was carried away by the American painter Alvazovsky, collected everything about him which was published in our country.

Ships, the azure sea, the violence of nature, the courage of sailors – all were topics of my school works. Only one of them was dedicated to space, “Spacecraft on the Moon” – the result of my acquaintance with the writings of Tsiolkovsky.

Although I became a pilot rather than an artist, brushes and paints accompanied me all my life. My first exhibition was held in 1958 in the House of Culture in the city of Kremenchug. It was arranged for my fellow pilots, who liked my pictures and was a most rewarding experience for me.

In 1960 I became a member of a cosmonauts’ group. It was the beginning of a new stage in my life and a new stage in my creative work. From then on, my art was closely connected with space technology. The study of space mechanics, astronomy, astrophysics, biology and the construction of spacecraft gave me topics for my pictures and let me see into the future of space research.

Then in 1967 a number of exhibitions, together with the artist Sokolov, were held on Gorky Street in Moscow, and in Orel, Simferopol and Perm. Exhibitions in Brno; in Paris, France; and in Prague and Bratislava, Czechoslovakia took place in 1968. My space flight on board the spacecraft Voskhod-II and my space walk gave me material for my art. I did my best to create a vivid picture of what I have seen. Space is endless in its diversity, and one could devote a lifetime to painting it.

My one-man exhibition took place in March 1975 in Zvezmy to honor the 10th anniversary of the flight of Voskhod-II. The exhibition showed 85 pictures in pastel, oil, watercolors and graphics – the result of ten years’ work.

My pictures and the pictures of artist Sokolov were published five times in joint albums: Wait for us, Stars (1967), To the stars (1969), Tracks of Stars (1970), Space Distances (1972), and The Man and the Universe (1976). Presently, I am working on a new series of paintings honoring the 20th anniversary of the launching of the first sputnik.

My first picture about the cosmos was inspired by Yuri Gagarin’s historic flight. Every time I depict the earth from space, I recall Gagarin’s extraordinary words: “Having flown around the earth on board the spacecraft sputnik, I saw how beautiful out planet is. People, let us save and increase this beauty and not destroy it.”

The Department of Defense says that the Navy launched an ABM around 2228 EST last night from the USS Lake Erie out in the pacific and did hit the falling spy satellite USA 193. They say it can take up to 48 hours before they are certain but their initial feeling is that they did rupture the hydrazine fuel tank. As of 0630 EST today they say that pieces of the satellite are beginning to fall over the Atlantic and that none of the pieces they have been able to find with radar appear to be larger than a football. I was reading Petre's blog and followed some of his other blog links and came across this youtube representation of the astronomy targets for the week by the Astronomical League. It has a nice segment on yesterday's eclipse.

I haven't found a link to this that you can get to it quickly each week.

The Shuttle landed safely this morning at KSC. That clears the way for the Navy to shoot down the failed spy satellite. SECDEF is in Hawaii to give the authorization. The event is scheduled to take place tonight at around 2225 EST.

I learned this morning that this is going to be a brute force attack. The warhead that normally rides atop an ABM has been replaced with a nonexplosive something that is intended to batter the satellite rather than to blow it up. They want to hit the hydrazine fuel tank to rupture it which is going to require a lot of luch since the satellite is not under control and must be spinning.



It is looking iffy for the eclipse tonight. It is supposed to be getting very loudy this afternoon and then begin to clear around 1900 EST with cloud cover being about 50% and decreasing by 2100 EST. By 0400 EST tomorrow it is supposed to be absolutely clear for about 12 hours, for what good it will do.

It was overcast at the beginning of the eclipse which made it difficult to see the craters at times. It cleared off around the time of totality and remained clear through the end of the partial phase.

I brought three recording devices with me to record my crater timings. One of them never started recording and the other two ran out of recording space after 1.25 hours and 3 hours respectively so I only got timings for events occurring on the front side of totality.

Saturn looked tiny in the low power eyepiece, but people were happy to see the rings.

My leg didn't appreciate me standing on it that long even with the splint in place.

In a news story I read over the weekend it sounded like NASA was doing something unusual by having two landing sights online for an early Wednesday morning landing of the Shuttle so it is on the ground to allow the Navy to try to shoot down the failed spy satellite USA 193. Today I see an article on CNN saying that the first attempt will occur Wednesday night. I was out over the weekend to see a bright pass but I missed it. Last night it was raining at the time of the brightest pass. Thre is a pass tonight that is supposed to be visible but it is supposed to be partly cloudy and snow showers tonight. Weather is also supposed to be bad tomorrow night for the lunar eclispe.

Space Weather says the strike will be timed with the middle of the Lunar Eclipse and make reentering debris invisible from the west coast of the USA.

I would have expected that the BBC would be publishing reports of British scientists saying the US has finally woken up since they have been bif on shooting down asteroids where we have not been. But there has been little reported on the BBC web page and no mention of it on BBC radio.

NASA is reported in BraveNet News to have revised the target dates for upcoming shuttle launches as a result of the delay in the lanuch of STS-122. The new dates are:

I was all ready to hobble down to McGraw and White Plains to try to observe the ISS and the brightest USA 193 pass before the Navy is likely to shoot it down but looked out the window and it was overcast so stayed in and had dinner. At the time USA 193 was supposed to be passing by I heard rain drumming on the window sills.

The Shuttle is now scheduled for a Wednesday landing. That means a Tuesday undocking before sunrise here. There is a STS-122 pass that CalSky reports as visible but it occurs before sunset and is only a Mag +0.8 pass. My experience has been that brighter passes in twilight are hard to locate so I don't hold much hope of seeing the ISS and Shuttle flying in close porximity before landing.



Spaceflight Now is showing STS-123 scheduled for liftoff on 11Mar08 at 0231 EDT. That means it should be visible passing NYC at MECO at 0239 EST. All that assumes no delays in the launch and good weather.

It doesn’t feel too bad until the wind starts to blow. My hands were getting cold in the thin handball gloves.

I calculated the wind chill temperature on the NOAA web site and in the same page they spell the term as "Wind Chill" and "Windchill". I filled out their contact form pointing out the inconsistency and they replied back that either spelling is correct. The person who replied said that her personal preference is two words and that she will edit the page to insure consistence. Given her preference and that it is spelled as two words in the graphics and most often as one word in text I suspect that it will be changed to two words throught. It only appears in their glossary as Wind Chill and there they refer to the Wind Chill Temperature (from the Wind Chill web page) as Wind Chill Factor.

The US Navy is going to try to destroy the failed spy satellite USA 193 that is due to reenter earth’s atmosphere sometime in early March. The move is billed solely as an attempt to mitigate the possibility that hydrazine propellant, still onboard, would reach earth and pose a hazard to humans. We are assured that this is not being done to show China or any other nation that we can shoot down a satellite too, as the Chinese did last year. Nor is there a possibility that anything else, like spy technology or data, would survive reentry intact and be of any use to anyone, we are told. The first attempt to shoot the satellite down is supposed to occur in 3-4 days (from yesterday), with the target window open for about a week, and it is said that the current Shuttle mission will have ended before it happens so there will be no possibility of damage to the reentering Shuttle from satellite debris. Nothing was said about the increased danger to the next Shuttle or any other near-term satellites launched after USA 193 is destroyed, if they do indeed hit it. If they don’t get it on the first try they will reassess the situation and have two more antiballistic rockets ready to be fired at it on subsequent passes over the Pacific Ocean, a total of three attempts for a "kill". Three-quarters of the earth is water so that is the most likely place where an uncontrolled entry would occur. The joint press conference that announced the plan yesterday evening said that the likelihood that the satellite debris would land in a populated area was only 1% and that the area blanketed would be on the order of two football fields. The satellite is about the size of two buses.

There are three good visible passes - if the weather cooperates (currently unlikely Sunday and doubtful Monday and Tuesday)- of the satellite beginning Sunday night. Heavens Above Links

I discovered today that I have had an incorrect heading in my sunspot reports for the past couple of years. P, which I have been calling Position Angle, is really Parallactic Angle. I think it is the same difference but am correcting my templates to reflect the new knowledge.
